The Awesome Foundation is a loose network of small-time philanthropists who award $1,000 micro-grants to people with certifiably awesome ideas every month. Chapters consist of ten self-organizing -around geographic areas or topics of interest, “micro-trustees” who each donate $100. The project can be artistic, scientific, and/or social in nature. Previous “awesome” projects have included a Healthy Food Outdoor Kitchen Program in Tel Aviv, a Giant Hammock Project in Boston, and a Community Chalkboard Project in New Orleans “Before I Die….” Since its inception in 2009, the foundation to date has awarded $428,000 in grants funding 428 projects.
The Fine Print: None -this grant is that awesome. The Awesome Foundation provides these grants with no strings attached and claims no ownership over the projects it supports. It is, in the words of one of the trustees, a micro-genius grant for flashes of micro-brilliance.
