Oak Tree Recipe

Ever wonder how to grow Oak trees from acorns? It’s easy! Late Fall is the perfect time of year to collect acorns to start growing new Oak trees over the Winter. Late dropping acorns (October and November) are typically healthiest. A healthy acorn specimen suitable for growing an Oak tree is one that is plump with a cap that is loose and/or easily removed. A naturally split or cracked acorn is fine, but do not collect damaged or crushed acorns.

How To Grow Oak Trees From Acorns:

  1. After inspecting the collected acorns, place them in a mixture of 1/2 peat and 1/2 loose barley in a clear zip-lock plastic food storage bag. Do not crowd the acorns. They should be loose in the mixture and the bag should not be more than half-full.
  2. Seal the bag and store it in the refrigerator throughout the Winter. Periodically check the moisture level -it should be damp, but not wet. At some point during the winter, the acorns should split open and white sprouts should begin to appear and grow.

When To Plant Acorns:

  1. In early Spring (late March to early April), fill individual plant pots with clean potting soil. Place the sprouted acorns horizontally in the soil about 1 1/2 inches deep and water. Place the pots in a south-facing window or under an artificial light source and keep the soil moist.
  2. During the next few weeks, the acorns will sprout into a sapling, with a few tiny, yet visible Oak leaves. As the trees grow, transplant them into larger containers. Do not allow the trees to become root bound, or dried out.
  3. You may keep your trees in plant pots indefinitely, or until they have reached a desired size to plant outside. Before planting them in the ground, introduce the trees slowly to the outdoors by placing them in cooler areas such as on a porch, or in a shed or garage for a few days at a time. Transplant them outside in the early Fall before danger of frost.

Fall Forecast

When we think about Autumn, there is a color that quickly comes to mind: Orange. That being said, Autumn Maple is a hue that is one of the top color trends each Fall season, an Artful Living Blog perennial favorite for introducing dazzling warmth into any palette. A quintessential Autumn shade that blends Tawny and Russet, and instantly infuses any outfit or home with energy and vitality. A rich, textured color that looks good enough to eat!

More than any other color in the palette, Autumn Maple tells a visual story through its expressive Fall coloration. It speaks of sleepy maple trees with leaves that hang low, exhausted from the Summer sun, exuding an Orangey-Brown glow that compliments the seasonal changes with a storyteller’s touch.

Lots of brands are embracing the beloved Autumn Maple look this season. A surprisingly versatile hue, it is one that you can integrate into your everyday wardrobe, for it has a sporty feel to it, and can be dressed up for a sartorially sublime occasion. This warm shade in various tones radiates optimism, and brings depth and refinement to any look or interior design project.

Keep the color going in your Fall garden with a combination of annuals and perennials with an Autumn Maple color scheme. For the perfect late-season bloomer, you can’t go wrong with Fall Mums, perfect for mass plantings with their domes of rich, jewel-tone colors, and tight, mounded habit and stunning bloom cover. To get the maximum effect from far away, stick to only one or two colors. A large grouping of Mums can awaken any drab Fall landscape.

Pumpkin Butter’s festive taste and intoxicating aroma make it a Fall classic. The name is a little deceiving because there’s actually no butter in the recipe, but you use it like a spread or jam. It tastes like delicious pumpkin pie -sweet, rich, and full of flavor. The look plus taste of Fall! It’s also vegan and gluten-free. Plus, it’s fun and easy to prepare. As you might expect, this packs well and makes a handsome Autumn Maple gift. Just don’t forget to make a batch for yourself! It also keeps in the fridge for a few weeks and freezes well so you can make it now to share, and have one on hand to savor the season. Enjoy!

Ingredients

  • 1 cup of organic pumpkin puree
  • 1/4 cup organic almond milk
  • 1/2 cup raw honey
  • 2 Tbsp organic maple syrup
  • 2 tsp cinnamon
  • 1 tsp ground ginger
  • 1 tsp nutmeg
  • 1/4 tsp allspice
  • 1/4 tsp coriander
  • pinch of sea salt

Directions

  1. Put all the ingredients into a saucepan and mix thoroughly.
  2. Simmer the mixture on a low heat until it thickens ensuring to stir it constantly to prevent it from sticking to the bottom of the pan. It should take approx 20-30 minutes to thicken.
  3. Meanwhile, sterilize a canning jar by washing it in very hot soapy water, rinse thoroughly and dry in a low oven for about 15 minutes. In the last 5 minutes put the lid in the oven.
  4. When the butter has sufficiently thickened transfer to the jar & screw the lid on immediately.
  5. Decorate with burlap twine and label and tag for gifting.

Shamanic Oracle

Mystical Shaman Oracle Cards, by Alberto Villoldo (Author), Colette Baron-Reid (Author), Marcela Lobos (Contributor), 2018. Deluxe-packaged oracle deck based on the wisdom & beauty of the shamanic world.

Legends say that before there was time, before there was language, there were the sacred symbols. The Medicine Wheel, the Curse, the Eagle, the Jaguar, and others spoke to us intimately. In their countless manifestations, they offered hope, expressed caution, illuminated opportunity, inspired creation, courted power, and shared knowledge. The sacred symbols belong to the realm of archetypes and the collective unconscious, the spiritual common ground shared by peoples modern and ancient.

Now, three master teachers and healers –Alberto Villoldo, Colette Baron-Reid, and Marcela Lobos, have brought their wisdom and talents together to offer a doorway into the realm of the sacred symbols with the Mystical Shaman Oracle. When you consult the oracle, you summon power and insight that can help you understand the present, heal the past, and influence the course of your future. We can become our own prophets and visionaries. We can converse directly with Spirit, dialogue with the forces of nature, speak with the great archetypes, the ancient gods, without intermediaries. No one needs to stand between the Creator and you, or between you and the great powers of nature.

The Owl Mystical Shaman Oracle Card.

Every card is a dynamic snapshot of a situation or a moment, and shows you how the moment can transform from one condition to another. The symbols present the forces and influences at play and the direction that the energy is moving toward. After you meditate on the image and the power that it holds, consult the text in this guidebook. Each card has three important messages: The Essence. The Invitation. The Medicine.

Alberto Villoldo, Ph.D. has trained as a psychologist and medical anthropologist, and has practiced yoga for more than 25 years. He has traveled to the source of India’s holy rivers in the Himalayas to rediscover the wisdom of the Sadhu, India’s ancient shamans. His best-selling books include: One Spirit Medicine; Shaman, Healer, Sage and Power Up Your Brain.
